Basically most of Linux OS will be able to be install to usb thumbdrive for easy access to any PC or laptop. As long the PC/laptop that you will be working on having a bios support to boot from thumbdrive, you will be booting into Linux OS in no time. After trying several USBLinux (Ubuntu,Xubuntu,Slitaz etc) myself,i decided to make it one of my posting so as to share to others, things to take note before installing your favourite Linux on the tiny device. There's few points that you have to take note and consider before jumping into it.
1. Is there really a need for USBLinux?
There's lots of possible reasons why there's a need for USBLinux.
It depends on individual preference on what/how they gonna use it for.
As for me,i use USBLinux to run on my company's PC due to some of the PC have
Japanese XP version installed which i simply don't understand.
.
2. Which OS should i choose?
Linux have lots of distros available on its server for easy download. But of all the distros, which will be the right one for you?For a start,Ubuntu will be the great choice if you are new to Linux.
Furthermore Ubuntu able to boot from a usb thumbdrive with persistent. So why Ubuntu?
Majority of us are so used of using Windows.
Relatively,we just want to feel abit of windows touch from the new OS so it could be easier for us to adapt to the new OS without getting lost searching where's the start menu is..etc.
More info about ubuntu - http://www.ubuntu.com/
3. How many gigs of USB Thumbdrive should i use?
For ubuntu installation a minimum space of 2GB is required.
4GB Thumbdrive will be good to go.
Some LinuxOS are so small (30mb/50mb) and 2GB Thumbdrive should be more than enough.
It also depend on the OS that you had chosen.
What you wanna store, what you wanna it to function as...
For normal usage, some mp3 files, pictures or some documents will be the common use.
So plan carefully what you wanna store on your thumbdrive.Try not to store sensitive documents,
Passwords or big files. You will never know when your thumbdrive will goes faulty.
4. Is it safe to run LinuxOS from a USB Thumbdrive?
Linux itself are not prone to virus compare to Windows.http://wiki.answers.com/
Overall it's safe to boot Linux on any PC/Laptop.
5. Is it stable to use LinuxOS from a USB Thumbdrive?
Base on what i've encounter from several Linux distros (Ubuntu,Xubuntu,Slitaz),most of it runs pretty well.
There's a few bad experience anyway while using LinuxOS such as lagging while surfing the net.
Waiting for a website to load was slow.
Sometimes the system just goes hang.
Sometimes unable to boot into the desktop.
Wait!Dont blame the LinuxOS.Every OS have its own Pros and Cons...so judge it on your own.
All this issues also depends on the condition of your PC,PC Setting,PC Hardwares etc.
Final words, you will be surprise to know that some of the distros infact are a way better than Windows.
You gonna love it!!
6. Things to take note....
a.) To be prepare to encounter some issues.Trial and error bounce to happen.
b.) Sometimes while booting, the screen will just goes blank or system will just go hang.
c.) Some of LinuxOS doesnt support persistent.Means you cant save your work.
d.) Ensure that your system meets the requirement of your chosen LinuxOS.
